Political Roundup: Unknown torture
Laniaya Alesia Hoofatt
Issue date: 5/1/09 Section: Opinion
America does not torture. We are a civilized nation. Dehumanizing detainees and then justifying it with permission slips is unjust. America should be the example for any developing nation. We learn from our mistakes and correct them. We don't justify them with a memo from legal counsel within our own government like they are permission slips to go to the bathroom when you're in sixth grade.
So why are parts of our government and former government officials justifying water boarding and torture techniques that America would not stand for? Many reasons can be given for this type of torture and one could be 9/11. How could they expect to get any accurate information from someone when they water board them 6 times a day for a month or play into their fears of insects or confined spaces? If I were water boarded 6 times a day for a month I would tell my torturer whatever they wanted to hear just so the pain would stop.
When every armed forces branch in America found something wrong with the torture techniques, there should have been a red flag for appointed officials to see there might be something wrong with their plan.
We are a civilized nation not animals. We are past apologies and we should be prosecuting those in authority who were involved. If it was the other way around and someone was doing that to Americans, our government would seek immediate action.

It saddens me that we are so concerned about being a "civilized nation" when it comes to the treatment of terrorist suspects who had information that could kill and destroy and yet we are unconcerned about the torture and killing of the unborn children who are being sacrificed for the sake of a woman's right to choose. I agree that the subject of torture is one that should have had an easy answer: just don't do it. On the other hand I could see it from their side, thinking that it's the only way to get real answers from the detainees. (Continued…)
