Athens, Thessaloniki, Meteora, Corinth and Olympia are just a few of the places we visited during the Cross Cultural trip to Greece in May. Sixteen students along with Professors Linda Sherrill, Chuck and Mary Campbell, traveled throughout the country of Greece for three weeks and the experience was more than we could have imagined.

When thinking of Greece, the first images popped into my head are the Olympics, Athens, Mount Olympus, and of course My Big Fat Greek Wedding. But Greece is so much more than these few things.  It has a historically rich culture that is fascinating.  It’s full of so many remarkable people and beautiful places to see.  For a fairly small land area, Greece has a varying topography.  The country is roughly 81,000 square miles, about the size of Kansas.

Along with its mainland, Greece also encompasses 1,400 islands. The country consists of city and countryside, mountains, farmland, and beaches. The crystal blue of the Aegean Sea, the fields of olive trees, and the archeological sites filled with artifacts give us a glimpse into ancient Greece.  Everywhere you look there is something new and interesting to see.

One of the highlights of the trip was visiting many of the Biblical sites.  Following along with much of the Apostle Paul’s writings we visited Thessaloniki, Corinth, Mars Hill and Ephesus, Turkey.  In all of these places we had the opportunity of a lifetime to stand in the same exact spot that Paul did in Biblical times.  This made his books even more meaningful and now when someone is talking about Corinthians, we have a frame of reference.  Another major Biblical site that we visited was Patmos, where we stood in the place where John wrote the book of Revelation.

Every aspect of Greece, from the scenery to the Biblical sites, to the people and the food, made the experience like nothing we could have anticipated and one that none of us will ever forget.
